Subsurface Investigation

Subsurface Investigation

Subsurface Investigation

(OP)
Dear all

I am seeking information on the availability and cost of either seismic or ground penetrating radar surveys, to be conducted on land in the Republic of Ireland.

Maximum depth of resolution required would be around 10-15m.
Borehole data from the site exists for 'truthing' the survey results.

If anyone can give advice or suggest a more appropriate forum for this question I would be most grateful.

Yours

Dubliner

RE: Subsurface Investigation

I recall reading an article in a trade magazine from Leica called reporter a few years ago about such a survey test- I suggest you approach local representative from Leica and ask for back copies of Reporter magazine- If you allow me a few days I shall try and find one locally and let you know which issue it was.
good luck

RE: Subsurface Investigation

You would likely get more response in the 'Geotechnical Engineers' or 'Foundation Engineering' forums.  Seismic and ground penetrating radar are geophysical methods of subsurface investigations; many geotechnical firms offer these services.  Seismic reflection and refraction is widely used by the oil industry.  Other methods may be appropriate depending on what you're looking for (depth to bedrock, layering, groundwater, etc.), for example electrical resistivity.

RE: Subsurface Investigation

seismic refraction survey should be available and relatively cheap - depending on the type of analysis you want to do.  seismic refraction can be done by creating an impulse using a hammer or for deeper refraction using an explosive charge.  two or more instruments measure the time for the wave to travel downward and reflect back upward off the different geologic strata.  can be used to determine the hardness or ability to excavate rock.  Either contact a geotechnical engineer or geologist or your university geology department.
