Elevator Shaft & BC of truss

Elevator Shaft & BC of truss

Elevator Shaft & BC of truss

(OP)
I am working on a project to install a new elevator in an existing building.  The elevator shaft will go through the bottom chord of 5 roof trusses.   Essentially I will be making two trusses out of one truss when the bottom chord is removed to allow the elevator.  Anything to look out for?  I am planning on using plywood gussets to add new web members as needed.  I have most of the truss member's grade stamps.  No shop drawings available.  Truss supplier is out of business.

RE: Elevator Shaft & BC of truss

SperlingPE,

I would contact any truss manufacturer and provide them the profiles of the trusses you need to have analyzed.  Ask to pay them a consulting fee of say 2 hours.  Provide them the following:
1.  Heel height, and pitch of the truss.
2.  Overhang dimension.
3.  Chord and web sizes, species and grades.
4.  Dimensions to each panel location and determine whether the members are center cut or single cut, etc.
5.  Plate location, position, size and gage (if possible)
6.  Also locate any splice location and plate size.
7.  Provide:  The code (IBC, IRC, etc), mean roof height, wind speed, exposure category, and gravity loading and each of the chords.

It is very difficult to properly model adequately in most engineering software and would be good economical use of your time to outsource this.  Many manufacturers, especially with a PE on staff, would be interested in helping you. You will then be given the truss design information to design the remediation with.  There are too many load cases for most engineers to properly develop.  Also you will have to design the permanent bracing for the modified trusses as part of the new system.

Thanks for the suggestions.
No local truss supplier will touch it since it isn't their truss.
I am looking into the permanent bracing.

What state are you in?

The whole dynamics of the truss will change. You need to analyse the new configuration.  Plywood gussets are iffy.

RE: Elevator Shaft & BC of truss

We would be willing to help you with the truss change. Email me if interested. If you can get the truss sketched "as built" we would recreate the truss, then calculated the required modifications.
