PDMWorks Taking Ownership

PDMWorks Taking Ownership

PDMWorks Taking Ownership

(OP)
When we check a project (or file) out of the vault it does not automatically give the person checking out the file ownership.  The files open read only and you have to go and get ownership of the files.

Is there a way to automatically gain ownership of the files on check out?

Shouldn't this be the default behavoir?

RE: PDMWorks Taking Ownership

I don't know whether you can set it as a default, but I think it's good - especially if you're in a company with a number of people, and many of them, know nothing about the design, or application, or anything.

RE: PDMWorks Taking Ownership

Maybe, in PDMWorks – Client Options under Command Defaults in the top center box, try “Auto own on select”.  I would not recommend taking ownership of everything you open. A lot of parts are opened during the day, by many different associates. How do you get them to release ownership? And if they do not intend to change it, why own it.
My guess is that you have checked in the PDMWorks 2006 VaultAdmin tool, “Bind ownership to SolidWorks read-write / read-only access”.
If you need ownership of a part from within an assembly, right mouse click on the part in the tree. Select “Get write access”. This will make it easier for you.
I like the “Bind ownership to SolidWorks read-write / read-only access” set because we used to all the time over write each others work. We would change a part before taking ownership. We would take ownership at time of check-in.

I forgot to mention that when you have a part open, Left Mouse Click on “File” in the SolidWorks main menu. Then you can pick, “Get Write Access”. This will make it easier for you.

You are correct we do have “Bind ownership to SolidWorks read-write / read-only access” selected and I think this is the corect way to do this.

I knew you could take ownership or "get write access" of the files after they were open it just seemed odd to me?  We typically wouldn't open a file unless we wanted to modify it.

Thanks for your help Bradlley

RE: PDMWorks Taking Ownership

Whenever you open the project in PDMWorks (within SW), highlight the column labeled "Options", and then check the "Take Ownership" checkbox.

If you're a one-man company, you may want ot take ownership automatically, but sometimes I only want to open parts in PDMWorks to re-use them in another project, so I wouldn't want ownership unless there was a revision.

If you've already opened the files, and want ownership, you can highlight the project in PDMWorks, Take Ownership > choose Selected item or Documents children

RE: PDMWorks Taking Ownership

If no one owns it, you can take ownership. If someone owns it, it opens read only. All settings are done through Admin login.

Where exactly is that? I can't find "Get write access" anywhere on the "File" drop down menu.

You need to make sure that you have the your options set correctly:

Tools, Options, Collaboration, check "Enable multi-user environment", check "Add shortcut menu items for multi-user environment"

Thank you dgowans.

RE: PDMWorks Taking Ownership

You should only qwn those parts, drawings, or assemblies you will change. Remember--an assembly file is a seperate entity from the parts it uses. If your change is to an assembly file and you are adding a part, the only files you should need to own are the assembly, the part added, and the assembly drawing.

We had a pair of drafters here who would own everything in the assembly when they revised it. Our practice is to check in a copy before going home. everytime they did, a whole bunch of revision controled parts bumped up a rev. So instead of Rev "B.-" it was now Rev "C.1" or "C.20," etc. And who can be sure they didn't acidentally make a change in a part and checked it in that way?

I think it is excellent practice to only own what you absolutely have to.

RE: PDMWorks Taking Ownership

No problem - spent a bit of time looking for exactly the same thing a couple weeks ago.  Frustrating when you know it's there but for the life of you don't know where to look........
