Splitting parts into multibody

Splitting parts into multibody

Splitting parts into multibody

(OP)
I am a mold designer so the terminology is as such,
If I have a core and I want to extrude an electrode from it, currently I use the combine/subtract then save the result as a new part, break all references to it and then back up the original file to get back to where I started, then make an assembly and combine the two files for location reference. Is there an easier way? Is there a way to do like a boolean operation and keep both bodies to create a multibody part?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Roger

RE: Splitting parts into multibody

Have you looked a Tooling split and used the core function?

I'm trying to make an electrode which requires to "fill the shape that is in steel" Core function will work if I have the geometry that cut the block originally but I don't have that option all the time.

thanks

RE: Splitting parts into multibody

Why break references?  Select your solid -> insert into new part .... it remains in context to the original but you can work from there on this new part

Use extrude up to surface. Create shutoff surfaces and parting surfaces using mold tools, then just use the surfaces in the mold folders to Extrude up to surface. Your electrode will now be a solid that you can continue to work with and it maintains all references to the original in the event that things change.

I break reference because when I roll back the original file to have my core block back it changes my electrode file with it. Sometimes the mold tools take alot longer than it's worth.

RE: Splitting parts into multibody

Copy the core body before you do the subtract.  Now you'll have both bodies in the same part.

Refer to the last lesson in the 2006 Advanced part training manual.  It covers the senario of creating an electrode using multi bodies with the combine feature.

seeing I bought my solidworks when 2005 was just entering the market the books I have are from 2005, unfortunately I was changing to solidworks from Cadkey/KeyCreator at the time and kept going back and using that package instead so I didn't use solidworks alot until the past few months. So what I was getting at, the 2005 manual has no specific part that addresses this topic individually. If it's using the combine feature I would assume it's taking the steps close to what I all ready do. If not then instead of making a reference to a manual I don't have, spill the beans and letme know what it says.

RE: Splitting parts into multibody

I would highley reccommend electrodeworks.  It is fairly inexpensive and easy to use.
