diffusion of ceramic into tool steel for warm forging

I'm intereted in using the ceramic diffusion process in my warm forging net shape forging I use H13 and I'd like to know who i could contact so as to try improving my die life and lubricity through this process. Anyone know who I could contact on more info?

RE: diffusion of ceramic into tool steel for warm forging

If I understand you correctly, you want to use ceramic tools in your warm forge operation?  I have experienced ceramic success and failure; it's not an inexpensive subject.

There are many factors that determine if ceramic is a good match for your operation; as well as type of lubricant.  The more information given, the better the assistance.  Are you looking to have someone examine your forging process?

yes I would be interested in having someone look at my process. I do warm forging with a 1500 ton mechanical press.
I forge 1100 degree c, 44mm, 1000 gram,.35 carbon steel.
I use a 100% soluble sodium hydroxide base lubricant.
I had heard of a company called Refmet that say they can diffuse the steel into the substrate of the entire die. Is this really possible? Thanks for your reply.

I am familier with diffusion of ceramic into metal.  But, without seeing a photo-micrograph it is hard to say if they use the term as you or I would.  Another thing to consider is if you have ceramic and steel married that way and the metal moves under a heavy forge load, will the cermamic move too much and fail?  There are other ways to increase tool life.

I contacted those fellows over seven years ago, same web-site.  I don't remember the specifics but it didn't go further than the first phone call.

If you want to move on with this I can leave a link, can you tell me the day and a time window that you plan to log-in?

Thanks for the reply again. I called this guy Refmet. while the technology sounds interesting I don't get the impression that they are professional. I will log on at 7:30AM on May 5th 2006 leave me a link please and thank you.

Here is a link to a very simple cermic dough-nut shape piece that you might consider for your application.  Let me know if it is a bad match.  I look forward to discussing this further.

thanks for the link. My dies are about 8" across the face.
10" tall and mostly flat. with a few rings on them. I make net forgings. That pic is it ceramic costed or is the ceramic in the subtrate?

RE: diffusion of ceramic into tool steel for warm forging

That graphic was just a basic solid ceramic dough-nut and I linked it as a generic platform.  An important concept about the graphic was the letters it contained at the bottom.  I hope I am making sense to you?

Hi

For simple clarity, a move off the forum would be better for me; no doubt for you as well.  I found that a small website was pretty easy to create and added it to my signature.  For more information look below.  Where the link ultimately ends with an email.  After much thought, this is the best I can do for now.
