Any Experiences In the Use of Vendor Item Control Drawing ? àà.

(OP)
I have been using Vendor Item Control Drawing (VICD) in accordance with ASME Y 14.24 for some time now to baseline commercially off the shelf (COTS) products. One of the hardest part of preparing a VICD is obtaining the tolerances for the nominal dimensions presented on the vendor’s catalog datasheet ( or other obtained vendor documents).

Also in the pass before using VICD, the drawing parts list would only calling out the vendor’s part number followed by “or equivalent” .  This practice had caused problems since “equivalent” is very subjective.

What I would like to hear if anyone else who have had any experiences in regard to obtaining vendor dimensional tolerances and the use of VICD in lieu of “equivalent”.  There are some in management (newly assigned) who feel it’s a waste of time in prepare a VICD.

RE: Any Experiences In the Use of Vendor Item Control Drawing ? àà.

I have used SCD (Source Control Dwg), but not often. Purchasing and planners don't like it because it ties them down to one product # or vendor. I very seldom use "or equiv" unless the part is a general part that tolerances are not important. For military projects, all OLE part have to have some type of VICD or SCD to control tol and mtl. I have on occasion contacted the product manufacturer and asked for detail dwgs with tol. Most of the time I get them.
So, I would not prepare a VICD unless the design calls for it. Some designs need it.
