contact analysis in involute gear

contact analysis in involute gear

(OP)
hai,
can any one tell the procedure to be followed for the contact analysis in involute spur gear.i have given contact mesh to the contact reegion and pinned the two gear and given torsional force to the inner surface of the gear but unable to analyse them .
i am able to visualyse only one gear as moving.i am also in doubt whether the procedure followed by me is right.
hope some one will help me

RE: contact analysis in involute gear

How did you "pin" the gears?  Do you have common node in the center of each spur gear that you pinned?  Or did you try to pin the inner wall of the hole through the gear?  Are you modeling in 2-dimensions or 3-D?

I would suggest that you try a single gear and make sure it rotates.  Then you can use that information to try the contact problem.

Mr.GBor,
thanks for the immediate reply.I am modelling a 3D model of Gear and pinion.in NX3 in the contraint option there was option for pinning a surface which gives only 1 DOF ie., rotation about its axis.i have given that to the  2 inner surafecs of pinion and gear.the teeth are alligned at the contact surface perfectly and i have also given contact mesh to them.
i have already tried analysis with  1 gear and it rotates.i dont have any common node.is it necessary to create or define an common node and analyse it please do help me

RE: contact analysis in involute gear

Sorry, I steped away for lunch.

I'm not familiar with the fixity options of NX3, but if your single gear was turning with the surface boundary condition applied, and you applied the same basic fixity to the pinion, you shouldn't be having trouble with the motion.

What is actually happening when you try to run the model?  Is it not converging?  Not contacting? or not doing anything?

Dear Sir,
sorry i went to home last day and could not reply immediately. My problem is

1.when i apply torque to the pinion and gear inner surfaces
only gear is moving and pinion has no effected.
2.Though the solution is converging there is no stress
  variation on pinion.
3.I ma not sure whether the contact stress is imaprting any
  force at the contact surface.
4.can u tell me how i should give contact forces and detailed procedure to analyse contact forces in gear

RE: contact analysis in involute gear

Hello Meenashki,
Check your contact bodies definition and your contact table definition too. Did you applied forces at contact region or torque at gear axis ?. What CAE software are you using?. If MSC.Marc, then i could help you a bit.

regards,
kodam
