Standard Broom Threads

Standard Broom Threads

(OP)
Does anyone out there have specs for threads on standard broom handles?  I have two different thread sizes, both appearing to have something close to ACME thread profiles but not standard TPI.

Most popular is about 3/4" outer thread dia x 5 TPI.

Another flavor is about 1.080" outer thread dia x 4 TPI.

I have to spec internal threads for parts that will accept these broom handles.  Any help is appreciated!

RE: Standard Broom Threads

I whipped down and into the janitor room to take a peek.  Buddy put a piece of cardboard between the screw and the nut and then wrapped a piece of duct tape around the mating joint, Red Green style.

I don't think he got an engineering specification to complete this.  So far, I've heard of no casualties.

RE: Standard Broom Threads

Have you tried tracking down taps and dies used for wooden items?  I remember seeing these sold in years past.

RE: Standard Broom Threads

As you state there are several thread sizes for handles but I've always been told that 3/4-5 ACME is the standard thread form in the US.
Manufacturers take a lot of liberty with this thread.  Most of the metal and plastic threads have very loose tolerances and form, especially the plastic ones.

Here is a company that supplies handles to a local manufacturer.  You might get some information as to the standard "Standard".

Thanks for your help.  It is indeed 3/4-5 ACME.  I verified by checking thread profile on a machined part, which had a much better tolerance than the wood, plastic, and cast metal parts I'd been checking.

RE: Standard Broom Threads

I figured that there would be a MIL spec along the lines of "Handle, mop, wood", and in fact there are, however they all included various gizmos for attaching a string mop directly.  No spec for threads.
