I am in a holiday and a friend of mine (owner of an automobile workshop) have asked me to assist him constract a 20KHZ boost converter running from a car battery- 10 to 14V with an adjustable output of 19 to 24v, 1A minimum.
I have tried to simulate it with PSIM software but got stuck especialy because of the range. Anyone out there who can kindly assist me do this? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

RE: SMPS design

Unless this is for a product that will be built a zillion times I would absolutely definitely buy one.  Designing one to do what you have described is a royal pain in rear.  It will be fraught with gotchas and probably take AT LEAST 2 man-weeks then crap out after a week of use due to some subtle detail.

If you really want to thrash around on this go to National.com or Maxim-ic.com get your hands on a reference design and then mess with it using the layout/PC board you get from them.  Then you have to layout your project the same as the reference or all bets are off.

RE: SMPS design

I'd agree.  An off-the-shelf inverter is less than $40.  With that, you can use any available power supply or adapter.  Unless you're simply bored with nothing to do... winky smile

Thank you itsmoked and IRstuff for the input. As I mentioned I’m on a holiday and this guy thinks I can do all things. He builds audio amp and very decent home-made  circuits that he sells to the locals. Now he wants to do this particular ones. He 've got a couple of MOSFETS, IGBTs and coils in the workshop. I’ve just visited the National site and reference to an old thread - got lots of info.
Thanks to you guys- Couldn’t help laughing after reading Itsmoked comment.

RE: SMPS design

PSIM..........Whatever has happened to REAL MEN!  We would throw together whatever we had in the junk box and see if it smoked or at least got too hot.  There was a design on siliconchip.com (if I remember the name) an Australian site that did exactly this.  It used an older Motorola chip, but could easily be converted to a TL494 that can be found in many older PC power supplies.  How are you going to use a spice program if you don't know the values of those junk box inductors.  I'm building one of these next week for my camp out of an old 350W UPS supply I got for $2.  Need it for my camp that has a lot of long wiring.  Finally moving up to a 60W color TV and need to boost the voltage.  Last year every time my honey would turn on a light, the TV would die.  Probably be running 80-100Hz because I'll use the existing transformer.
