Steel joists - tag

Steel joists - tag

Steel joists - tag

(OP)
I'm looking at a warehouse probably 35-to-40 years old. It has steel bar joists for roof framing. The bar joists are tagged as 0250715 J1. Question is, what does it mean? Can it be traced back to a joist designation?

RE: Steel joists - tag

J1 is most likely the joist mark that refers to the shop drawings. The other numbers don't mean anything to me unless it is perhaps a special joist with load info.

Some joists have multiple tags. You may have to look at all of them, although I have usually found that the metal tag is the one that you want. The other tag(s) may be for painting info.

I suggest you check all tags and examine adjacent joists. You should be able to find the info. that you need.

RE: Steel joists - tag

DGpe - what to do is call around to as many local joist companies as you can in your area and ask them if the 0250715 number is one of their project numbers.

The J1 is a mark designation that would correspond to a joist layout on that particular project.

I just did this on a project -had a tag with a project number and mark number and found a local joist firm who corroborated that the joist project no. and the city location matched one of their projects.  They were able to identify the joist size.

Sometimes they have the original shop drawings for the project and other times they don't.  Depends on the age and the degree of archiving that the joist company does.
