Registry scanners, cleaners, optimizers

Hello,

I would appreciate any suggestions and opinions on registry scanners, cleaners, optimizers. There are hundreds out there from free to $$$$$$. Do they even accomplish anything? or are they a gimmick? Will it really improve computer stability and performance-especially when running SW?

Someone recommended the following software: jv16 PowerTools 2006. Any input? Following is the link:

Thank you,

Sorry to reply to my own message, but I forgot some valuable information. I run Windows XP Professional on a network with a file server running Windows Server 2003.

I use CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/
and a free version of RegCleaner which can be found at http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm

I look after network of 10 computers at work I have CCleaner run automatically at every startup & use RegCleaner whenever I uninstall a program, to help clean up any left over bits. I rarely have problems but cannot tell you if it is due to those programs as I have used them for so long & don't have a system to compare to.

CorBlimeyLimey,

Any part of ccleaner that you don't use? I downloaded it and took a look.

I unchecked the Cookies, Auto-complete Form History, Windows Size/Location Cache, Hotfix Uninstallers and Custom Files & Folders under the Cleaner section. I also created a "Cookies to keep" list under the Options section.

RE: Registry scanners, cleaners, optimizers

For registry maintenance, I use Registry Mechanic. It is only $30 so it isn't too expensive.

I downloaded Crap Cleaner, and you can't beat free!

Thanks for the input. I'm leaning toward CCleaner now.
