Industrial Standard Time

Industrial Standard Time

(OP)
Hi, I'm trying to establish a standard time for grinding and welding as well as material handling (move from one station to another in production floor). Please advise what is the best way to do that! Thanks

RE: Industrial Standard Time

The best way, if you already have an established assemblly/manufacturing line, is to do time studies on how long your current operations take.

These times will vary based on the complexity of the parts you work with and the type of tools in use.  Once you get all of these times together, you can try to average them or group them into functional times.

If you have standard movements/motions, the best way to determine your standard working times is to perform a MOST analysis.  It is a simple method which determines many of the useless and often overlooked movements involved in an operation as well as full time studies.  I would suggest the book by Kjell Zandin titled "MOST Work Measurement Systems".  It is somewhat self explanatory and can be learned in a relatively short time.  All of the operations that you have listed would be covered in this method.  It has worked well for me so far and has helped to highlight wasted movements in our operation.  Also, if you are a union shop, often times stopwatches are not allowed, and this method becomes real important.  PFD (personal fatigue and delay) are already factored into these numbers so these times are true, noting normal techniques.
