how transfer 2d transient thermal to 3d for stress analysis

Hi,

how can a 2D thermal load (from transient thermal analysis)be transfered to a 3d model for stress and distortion analysis...

I have seen a bunch of research papers using such a method... could someone please advice

thanx

RE: how transfer 2d transient thermal to 3d for stress analysis

If there is some kind of geometric similarity between your 2-D and 3-D Models you can use BFINT command to transfer the temperatuere loads from 2D thermal to Structural 3-D.

i am try to model a welding simluation.. 18" * 3" * 3/8"

First, I am only considering one-half part of the welding plate.. and the thickness of that one half is constant

the heat is apply on the top surface (which would be my 2D plane)..

That means your 3-D model is just an extrusion of your 2-D one. BFINT works for your case. All you have to do is to write proper node files for front and back faces of your 3-D model (assuuming 1 element thick) before interpolating from 2-d model.
