Is any body famiiliar wiht acrylic acid technology ?

RE: Acrylic acid technology

I helped design an acrylic acid plant over 24 years ago, using fixed bed reactor technology.  Unfortunately, the plant was never built for reaons that had nothing to do with its technical viability.

The process involves 2-stage oxidation of propylene.  The main products are acrylic acid and acrolein (which is further converted into acrylic acid in the 2nd reactor, but not completely).  There are also a number of side reactions, so there is a fairly extensive separation train of highly non-ideal distillation columns, including vacuum columns for separating acetic acid from acrylic acid.

Since acrylic acid cannot be stored for indefinite lengths of time (it will degrade), it is best to use it directly, e.g., for acrylate esters.  The ones I'm familiar with are methyl, ethyl, butyl, and 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylates.

Thanks for your valuable response.do you have any idea about the ouput of AA.? i mean, is it  possible to produce Glacial acrylic Acid only  and no Acrylate ?

RE: Acrylic acid technology

Yes.  The plant I helped design had a complete esters plant attached.  Acrylic acid is unstable in long-term storage.

My primary role was in evaluating VLE data and then developing the complete VLE and LLE thermodynamics package, along with simulation and design methods for complex chemical systems.  The design was completed, including all sections of the plant which were ready for detailed equipment design.  There was also an evaluation of a fluid bed reactor as an option to the fixed bed design.

we would like to use GAA to produce Super absorbent polymer , but some company use poly acrylic acid instead .

is there any differences between GAA and PAA ?
