Does anybody know of a good reference material to calculate the uplift capacity of a metal rod or re-bar in soil at different depths and for different types of soil?

I never done this calculation before with a rebar but I would rationalize simliar to a pile being pulled out of the ground. A statics book or a soils book should have something for you. My calc would go something like this:  The soil vertical shearing stress x the perimeter of the rebar x the depth of the rebar would equal the uplift force reqiured to extract the rebar. Good Luck. A while back, I was looking up data for some screw-in anchors, and found that capacity is VERY dependent on soil characteristics.

I know from using rebar for Christmas Tree stakes that when you drive them in about a foot or 18", the uplift capacity is VERY dependent on how wet the soil is.
