RE: I am a new man !

EngineerCN, welcome to the forum.  Because the URL suffix for China is CN and your surname is Zhang, I will also guess you are from China?

If so, that is an interesting coincidence.  I have spent a good portion of yesterday and today negotiating with representatives from the CAAC who are visiting us to audit some documentation.  It is the Chinese equivalent to the United States FAA.

I believe (and please correct me if am wrong) that the English language title of the CAAC would be "General Administration of Civil Aviation of China".  I found that title on their official website www.caac.gov.cn, but that is about the only English on the page, so I cannot read the rest of the page.

Again welcome, and since my knowledge of Mandarin is zero, may I say your use of English is much much better than I could do with Mandarin!

With the "CN" in the handle & Zhang as a surname, it's a pretty safe bet at Chinese ... unless this is a sting operation. smile

EngineerCN:
Don't change your english one bit.  I find it refreshing and entertaining.  This coming from someone who is a foreign language amebia.  Just not wired right, I guess.

My hat's off to anyone who speaks two or more languages, much less our convuluted one known as american english.  (meaning, I respect you).  I'm struggling with spanish and it has very logical and simple, consistant rules.

Welcome!

RE: I am a new man !

I agree with all above that the OP is from China. Had he not told that he was not in America, I would have mistaken him for a southerner(with all the knowledge I got from reading O Henry). I felt like I was reading a paragraph from the brilliant writer.

Welcome suh!

We all is eagerly waiting.

RE: I am a new man !

That's the right attitude Shawn! Just jump into the water to see how well you can swim.

So, you are working with my fellow countrymen (Electrolux was started by the Swede Axel Wenner-Gren) Any Swedes at all at your location?

BTW, you swim well enough to survive! We will help you if it gets rough...

RE: I am a new man !

I have a friend in Shanghai University in  Biology Department. His name is Zhang Endi. Please see if you can say a Hello to him.
You can tell him Arun Rao from Bangalore Indian Institute of Science. He will perhaps recall.

RE: I am a new man !

Eletrolux sucks!

wink

That's a language based joke EngineerCN, the style is called a "pun", which means that it appears to mean one thing but can also mean another that is unrelated or opposite. In this case, Electrolux is very well known for making very good vacuum cleaners, so the "sucks" means that it has good vacuum potential. "Sucks" is also a word used to decribe something that is very poorly constructed or very bad.

English speakers in particular like to use puns because our language is so filled with bits and pieces of other languages that meanings can easilly get crossed up. We (many of us anyway) like to play with that. Beware!

Welcome.

Hello EngineerCN.

Ni hao?

I spend much of my time in your country and am very, very grateful for the people who've invested the energy to learn enough English to permit me to interact with them. I'm also grateful for their willingness to adopt a Western name since I'm incapable of pronouncing most of their real names.

Beyond a few simple words, Mandarin escapes me.

I work in the Southern part of China, about an hour's drive from Guangzhou.

Welcome to the group.

RE: I am a new man !

I forgot to say, the reason why I made that pun is because the title you gave to this thread is itself a pun, although probably unintentional.

"I'm a new man!" is something that would be said perhaps after some major life changing event such as finding the love of your life or surgery (which is what BiPolarMoment's sarcastic joke was about in case you didn't get it). I think, after reading more of your posts, that you intended to just declare that you are a new visitor to this forum.

This all makes me curious about jokes in other languages. I know that puns are somewhat common in Italian and Spanish, which would lead me to believe they exist in other Latin based languages, but what about Chinese and other Asian based languages? I do know that Mandarin in particular is full of very subtle tonal inflections that can change the meaning of a word, so that would make me think that puns must exist there too, but I have never asked.

RE: I am a new man !

EngineerCN, I am in aviation in the United States.  I would be glad to learn anything I can learn about aviation in China.  I have been involved in modifications to aircraft that belong to Air China.

Is there a website available that is written in English but talks about aviation in China?

Best regards,

RE: I am a new man !

CN
I will learn anything if you can be kind enough to explain the secret in selling your goods at such a low cost. You source iron ore at international prices yet your steel cost is lowest.

RE: I am a new man !

FrenchCAD,

Ice wine. One of the finest dessert wines available. I would like to say the Canadians invented it, but of course, the Germans did. I do know that Inniskillin makes some of the finest in the world.

http://www.inniskillin.com/en/ice/index.asp?location=ice

Grapes are left on the vine well into the winter months. The resulting freezing and thawing of the grapes dehydrates the fruit, and concentrates the sugars, acids, and extracts in the berries, thereby intensifying the flavours and adding complexity to the wine made from it.

Genuine icewine must follow VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) regulations that prohibit any artificial freezing of grapes. The grapes are painstakingly picked by hand in their natural frozen state, ideally at temperatures of -10 to -13 degrees C -- sometimes the picking must be done at night to take advantage of the temperature. Yields are very low, often as little as 5-10 percent of normal.

The frozen grapes are pressed in the extreme cold. The water in the juice remains frozen as ice crystals, and only a few drops of sweet concentrated juice is obtained. This juice is then fermented very slowly for several months, stopping naturally.

The finished icewine is intensely sweet and flavorful in the initial mouth sensation. The balance is achieved by the acidity, which gives a clean, dry finish. The nose of icewine recalls lychee nuts. The wine tastes of tropical fruits, with shadings of peach nectar and mango.

Icewine is winter's gift to the wine lover: one of the best-kept secrets of the wine world that garners gold medals in virtually every competition in which it is entered.

The greatest of international accolade for Canadian Icewine was bestowed on Inniskillin 1989 Icewine at Vinexpo, Bordeaux, in June 1991. This wine, judged by an international panel, was accorded the fair's highest award, Le Grand Prix d'Honneur.

I agree with you, I would like to learn some Mandarin!

RE: I am a new man !

I agree wholehartedly, Ashereng.

I haven't tasted Canadian Ice Wine, but several German Eisweine. It doesn't happen often, though.

Some say it is like a Sauterne, but thos people have no idea what they are talking about - or have a defect in their olefactory organs and/or taste buds.

Re the Dubonnet; I used to have a glass of Dubonnet before dinner back in the sixties-seventies when I worked a lot in France. When I try to order it now in a restaurant or brasserie, they give me blank looks and seem not to understand what I am saying.

are there engineering forums like this in China?

RE: I am a new man !

Hello EngineerCN
Welcome to the forum.
Re; The ice Wines from Inniskillin. I grew up about 30 miles North of their Okanagan Vineyard. I've driven past McIntyre Bluff bluff many times. I never thought that I'd see anything that close to home on a worldwide forum like this. I'm about 3000 miles away now, and that makes it more enjoyable.

Yours

RE: I am a new man !

waross,

I am more familiar with Niagara-on-the-Lake. I guess one of these days, I will get to Okanagan (other side of Canada).

Gunnar,

I agree also, it really isn't so much a Sauterne. Perhaps sort of like a late harvest Riesling that has been chilled? Then again, maybe not.

To arunmrao
I don't think we sell goods at low price, maybe the price is low to an American customer!
I think the most important reason is the low labor price in China,as me,I owned 5,OOO RMB a month, only about 600 USD !So more and more foreign firms settle factory in China.
And most products are lower than in US,so if someone in forum wants to purchase lower cost higher quality goods, such as plastics, sheetmetal parts, equipments.Maybe I can help you!

corus: good one!
I was just interested in the topic. Within our company we try and set-up 'expert communities' in and around similar speaking countries to discuss experiences/general/specific topics and most countries have thrived apart from China. Wondered if it was a cultural thing or just us.

RE: I am a new man !

CN,
Thanks for your reply. It is interesting to note that you get 600USD /month. This is quite high for an engineer in India. Thus your wages are not low. Also I know your power cost is at par with India, but your products like castings, electrical parts, auto spares are cheaper.

RE: I am a new man !

CN:  Reference your reply to arunmrao;
"....such as plastics, sheetmetal parts, equipments.Maybe I can help you!"

Careful!  Starting to think like a capitalist!  It can be like a drug.  You have some potential there.

winky smile

RE: I am a new man !

After the drug effect has faded you may need a Viagra!!CN be careful.

RE: I am a new man !

Ashereng : Now that you explained about Icewine, I remember I heard about. I never tasted any though. I really doubt it could taste like a Sauternes as some people seems to say.

skogsgurra : Dubonnet is almost impossible to find anymore. I don't even know if that still exists.

And speaking about engineering forums around the world, I know one for French-speaking people.

RE: I am a new man !

Arunmrao,

May its the volume of production that counts. I know of a manufacturer who use to make clocks & calculators in India, shifted their base to china to cater the world market in terms of production. Increase in volume was 10 times. They now claim to be the largest clock maker in the world

Generally it happens that the chineese products of first quality gets into USA and other markets. What I see in Indian street shops are very cheep and mostly poor quality. But for a toy having shelf life of 7 days, if gifted to a baby like my daughter, quality is not a  problem.

dinesh

RE: I am a new man !

FrenchCAD,

You should. You can always go over to Germany and try their Eisweine, or go online to Inniskillen and have them ship a bottle. It is worth it. A littel touch of Canadiana.
