electric power steering

(OP)
I am a remanufacturer of power steering products and are presently commencing an electric power steering programme.
I am seeking advice on electronics, test rigs, wiring diagrams related to this subject. Do any members have any info they can share?

RE: electric power steering

That's an interesting situation. Though they start out with some trial and error, electronic transmission rebuilders figure out what to do without much electronic testing. Most of the high-tech testing is done by the mechanic doing the diagnosis. Once the component is "condemned" the rebuilder just rebuilds it. Once you figure out what goes wrong with them all, your test equipment will probably gather dust while you are busy making deposits at the bank.

RE: electric power steering

On the other hand, steering can be considered more safety critical than a transmission. Each unit may need basic operation and leak testing; at least at first. With time and experience, the scope of testing should diminish. Dynamic load testing might be the first thing to "outgrow". You may, at some point, end up only doing simple electrical continuity tests, and pressure checks with air. Quality control may be the real key.

RE: electric power steering

A caution to add is that the electric power steering systems are a lot more complex than most "electronic" automatic transmissions. The best advice I can give in setting up to remanufacture electric steering units is to get ahold of a few good ones so you can stare and compare. Then you just label up all of your test points and what they should measure in various states and your good to go.(Thevenins therom at its finest)  The best thing you can get is a really good electronics tech to help set up your testing procedures.
