Alternate 'Assembly' Configuration

Alternate 'Assembly' Configuration

Alternate 'Assembly' Configuration

(OP)
Is it possible to have two configurations, 1 an assembly, 1 an individual piece part?  (I'm positive it's possible, provided you 'start' the modeling process with an assembly configuration, then suppress and hide as necessary, but is it possible to add an assembly configuration after-the-fact?

(Take, take, take - haven't dished out much information lately.)

RE: Alternate 'Assembly' Configuration

Have you tried it? If so, what do you get?

It (SolidWorks) wouldn't let me.  It's certainly no trouble to do what I want.  I just start from scratch with an 'assembly' template, inserting the already-created piece part (as an alternate configuration) then create the assembly configuration.

RE: Alternate 'Assembly' Configuration

What are you trying to do?  Do you want an assembly, then want to save that assembly as a part file, and then use that single part file as the 2nd configuration of the assembly?
Example:

Assembly
Config 1 = Assembly
Config 2 = Part

Is that correct?

Yes, smcadman, but it's over now - don't worry about it.  Only, future encounters would pose the problem now.

RE: Alternate 'Assembly' Configuration

So, does that mean you found the answer? What did you do?

RE: Alternate 'Assembly' Configuration

What he was attempting to do is what I have forgotten to do in the past.  (Huh?)  That has been suggested at Solidworks events to increase speed with large assemblies.  One problem of course is that if you modify your sub-assembly, the solid part does not update, so you have to remember to update major changes.

Also, it's better to mate to planes instead of features if you do this so you won't lose mates.  You can also go to Utilities > Simply > all and make a kinda-simplified configuration of the assembly.  I say "kinda" because it doesn't always make the sub-assembly "faster" in the top-level assembly.
