Lifting Trunnion on a cylindrical shell?
Lifting Trunnion on a cylindrical shell?
(OP)
Hello,
I am trying to determine the stress in a cylindrical shell due to a longitudinal moment caused by lifting from a trunnion. I wish to lift a stack by two circular trunnions spaced 180 degrees apart near the top of the stack. API 650 has an appendix for nozzle loading which is close to my scenario but has some fundamental differences:
a) API 650 assumes the tank shell has a penetration through it, where a trunnion would be welded on the outside with no hole cut in the shell.
b) Tanks have a floor, which a stack does not, however there are stiffening rings on the stack.
I guess what I am looking for is some advise on what direction I should be looking in either a certain code or standard or a technical paper that may addresses this issue.
Thanks,

RE: Lifting Trunnion on a cylindrical shell?
If I remember right, one of the load cases of WRC 297 is a nozzle that is "rigid", ie, a rigid plug attached to the shell at that point, which should work for what you're after.
RE: Lifting Trunnion on a cylindrical shell?
Technical Note: Do advance serach "Dennis Moss" or Lifging Lug.
Moss Book give details for the design of Lifting Trunnion on a cylindrical shell
the other option is Engineering Software Tool's: Codeware COMPRESS www.codeware.com or FE-Pipe www.paulin.com
