Shear Strength of SS304

Shear Strength of SS304

Shear Strength of SS304

(OP)
Does anyone know the shear strength of SS 304 and 302?  I looked it up on MatWeb, but they do not have that property listed.

Thanks,

Bill

RE: Shear Strength of SS304

An approximate value that could be used for ultimate shear strength is about 60% of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS);

0.6 * UTS

RE: Shear Strength of SS304

Also, I might mention that if you need a specific source for shear ultimate strength of austenitic stainless steels, the military handbook (MIL-HDBK-5H, 1998) contains actual shear ultimate strength data ;

metengr,

Thanks for the info.  I have more questions if you do not mind.  Does this approximate formula work for other metals?  Is this formula documented somewhere?

You have been helpful.

Metengr,

Thanks for your help, you answered my question at the same time I was summitting it.  You must have ESP.

RE: Shear Strength of SS304

It's not ESP it's something that comes with age and experience.

One point in designing with 304 SS is that in small sections the shear strength will change with the rate that shearing forces are applied.  This is due to 304 SS work hardening.

RE: Shear Strength of SS304

The factor for shear as a fraction of ultimate is different for various alloy systems.
If you look up information of comercial equipment for shearing of slitting flat sheet you will see a maximum thickness rating for the equipment depends on the metal.
Austenitic alloys, stainless and nickels, will have higher shear strength to UTS ratios than most other materials.
