Why are there two listings (lines) for SA-240, type 304 stainless steel plate?  The UNS numbers are identical.  I could understand if they were different product forms.  Would this have anything to do with Section III, Class 2 or 3?  Also, many other materials are listed this way.

The difference and reason for the two listings has to do with the "Notes" column.  You will need to go to the end of Table 1-A and find what each note says to determine which material to get your properties from.  The notes are in "General", "Heat Treatment", etc...

Ksuengrng,

Thanks for the explaination.  Now tht I have read the "notes" more closely I see the added restrictions.  I didn't bother to do that before because they do not pertain to my application (autoclaves, Section VIII, Div. 1).

Thanks again,

check to see if one is metric units. usually designated by an M in the gesignation.

You  need to read the notes.  Often with austenitic stainless steel two design stresses are given, a high stress for when distotion is not a problem and a lower one for when it is (for flanges etc).  This is because the material has high tensile strength but low yield strength.
