Graphic Card for new workstation...

Graphic Card for new workstation...

(OP)
I am in the process of buying a workstation for home.  Although they seem to be unsupported, will a nVidia GeForce work with SW?  What are the advantages of spending the cash for a Quattro card?

RE: Graphic Card for new workstation...

The SW notes for geforce cards

Limited number of accelerated windows. Amount of video memory determines the number. If 64M - 128M of memory, 3-12 accelerated full screen windows.

I have run a geforce 4400ti on my home computer (3 years) without any problems. I have even had more than 12 windows open without any noticeable regen issues.

Looking at the SW notes closely it says 12 accelerated full screen windows. Does this mean you have to have 12 full screen windows on top of one another before there is a problem? You can also minimise any windows you are not using. I’m not to sure if tiling (horizontally or vertical) will prevent them from being on top of one another or if they’re classified as being full screen windows. The definition states accelerated windows. It will still open more windows they just won’t be accelerated.

RE: Graphic Card for new workstation...

If you don't use anything in the Green, then when it crashes or it runs slow, your video card will be the first target... so I suggest you look at teh Quadro FX series over the Geforce cards.

"What are the advantages of spending the cash for a Quattro card?" .... Basically stability & support.

However, you could try a forceware hack on the GeForce. See  success with rivatuner!  thread559-87811

RE: Graphic Card for new workstation...

Graphics issues are among the worst you can have--unless you can design without seeing your screen and toolbars--in which case I wouldn't worry about it.

I have several clients who thought they could skimp on the graphics card.  I won't design on their machines anymore--it's not worth the hassle of closing every window as soon as I open another--and I normally operate with at least nine part or assembly files open at one time.  There is just no way to justify the time lag in getting a cheesy card--I'm running a business.
