Orientating Two Surfaces Within Close Proximity of One Another

Orientating Two Surfaces Within Close Proximity of One Another

Orientating Two Surfaces Within Close Proximity of One Another

(OP)
I have two surfaces created from points which were extracted from a digitizer.  Surface 1 is visible on one layer and Surface 2 is visible on another layer. I have temporary coordinate systems that relate each surface to one another. I would like to bring the two surfaces within the same screen (layer) and orientate them appropriately (bring them close but not touching).   I am also wondering, once the surfaces are orientated appropriately, will I have two surfaces with each having its own coordinate system and be able to move them around.

One more thing, will I be able to import as into Abaqus as set up within unigraphics?

Any insight would be great

Thanks!

RE: Orientating Two Surfaces Within Close Proximity of One Another

Why weren't the 2 scans created from the same CSYS?  That would have saved you all of this repositioning, unless you're not reverse engineering 100% of the scanned part.

NX has only 1 CSYS and that's absolute 0,0,0.  All others are WCS (work coordinate systems) and can be moved anywhere you wish.  I personally feel they have little use, but I do understand that some people just can't work from one CSYS like most can, so there is a need for them.

To answer your question about moving the surfaces, it might be a good idea to know what your downstream plans are for these surfaces before offering a suggestion.  Are you going to use them to make a solid?  Do you NEED to retain the associativity between the surfaces and their defining points?  Can the 2 surfaces be unparameterized (dumb, no history)?

To move the surfaces onto the same layer click Format -> Move to Layer then pick the objects to move and then their destination layer.

RE: Orientating Two Surfaces Within Close Proximity of One Another

Hi Tim,

Thanks you very much for your reply. What I am trying to accomplish is just the surface (no pun intended) of something bigger.  I would like to conduct an FEA on the surfaces in contact with one another while I fix one surface and manipulate the other.

Well, I followed your suggestion and I even plotted the two surfaces in the same view port. The problem I am having is that they are both on the same coordinate system.  I cannot manipulate them within with respect to one another within the viewport. Any further suggestions are welcomed??? I am new to unigraphics and it can be very frustrating

Thanks

RE: Orientating Two Surfaces Within Close Proximity of One Another

YOu could try to put each surface in a separate part, then create a new part and insert the two parts, manipulate them as wanted and if needed you now can either promote or wave them into the part for various purposes.
