Quantity of Part in an assembly on the Part Drawing
Quantity of Part in an assembly on the Part Drawing
(OP)
Hi,
I know round about ways of doing this but I am wondering if anyone out there has there own nice easy method and if they wouldn't mind sharing it.
Lets say I have a panel part that appears in a machine assembly. The assembly can dynamically change which will automatically change the quantities of the 'panel' part which are in the assembly.
I would like the panel parts drawing to now state how many times the panel is used in the assembly (in the same was as the Assembly BOM will give this info).
Anyone know a good way of doing this?

RE: Quantity of Part in an assembly on the Part Drawing
- In your part drawing, insert a view of the assembly and position the view outside the drawing sheet
- Add a balloon to the part and choose "Quantity" for the balloon text
- Change the balloon style to "No Leader"
- Move the balloon onto the desired location on the drawing sheet
Now you have the assembly quantity on your part drawing and it will update with changes to the assembly. This will obviously increase the size of your part drawings but it is the easiest way to achieve this goal.RE: Quantity of Part in an assembly on the Part Drawing
ctopher - I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I need the qty of parts which appear in the assembly on the part drawing.
Stoker - What you suggest will work but my assemblies can be really big which will mean sluggish speed opening the drawings. I suppose I would use a configuration of the assembly with everything suppressed except the panel and hide that view. (heh - maybe that is what ctopher means)
Thanks for the replies.
RE: Quantity of Part in an assembly on the Part Drawing
From your initial post, it sounds like panel quantity is driven by a pattern/equation. This may be one of those "roundabout ways", but you can:
1. Create a sketch in the assembly consisting of one construction line with a length dimension.
2. Make an equation such that [line dimension]=[pattern qty]*1. You have to go through an equation rather than link values because you can't link values on two different dim types.
3. Create an in-context sketch on the part, also consisting of one construction line. Make the endpoints coincident with the endpoints of the assembly sketch.
4. On the part drawing, show the sketch, add a ref dim for the line length, and create your note with a link to that ref dim. You can then hide the sketch and the ref dim created.

You should turn that into an FAQ for future easy reference. That question has been asked before & will probably be asked again.
