Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

(OP)
I'm in the process of performing FEA on a wooden truss assembly in Cosmos Adv. Professional. Truss is made from Wetern Hemlock Fir-construction grade. For material properties, I've added mod. of elasticity (1.2e6 psi) and poisson's ratio(0.3 ?). How are results from the FEA interpreted for factor of safety. I'm accustomed to analyzing steel structures with yield and ultimate strength values. How is this performed with wood?

RE: Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

Are you checking this truss for NDS code compliance?

RE: Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

(OP)
No. The truss is being upgraded from a sheet metal roof to residential roofing shingles. FEA is being performed to verify the integrity of the structure with the additional weigth of 3/4" sheathing, shingles, wind and snow loads.

RE: Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

The following standard sets the guidlines for metal plate connected wood trusses:

ANSI/TPI 1-2002 "National Design Standard for Metal Plate Connected Wood Truss Construction"

RE: Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

How are you modeling the heel plates?

RE: Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

(OP)
I'm only modeling the wooden trusses for strength (buckling).

RE: Performing FEA on Wooden Trusses

OK.  Then how do you consider the eccentricity at the heel joint?
