simple question - is s.c.c. applicable to c.s.?

Is stress corrosion cracking applicable to carbon steel?

(p.s. I realize this is a newbie question and have spent a few minutes on google  - I know the answer is there but couldn't find it so pls don't flame me).

Did you have any environment in particular that you are concerned with?

RE: simple question - is s.c.c. applicable to c.s.?

(OP)
No. I was just wondering why most of the references to s.c.c. I have stumbled accross discuss stainless steel examples.

Probably because SS and high Ni alloys are used around wet and corrosive conditions more.  Most SCC of carbon/low alloy steels occurs in high strength stuff.

RE: simple question - is s.c.c. applicable to c.s.?

There are stress corrosion cracking mechanisms for almost evey metal/alloy system.  Depending on the alloy the evironment that will drive SCC is different.
In CS, caustics and sulfides can cause it.  In copper alloys ammonia will.  You can stress crack Ti with nitrous oxide.  And of course, stainless steels with chorides.

Usually we don't talk specifically about SCC, we lump it al together as environmentally assisted cracking.  This includes hydrogen effects and even liquid metal embrittlement.

Corrosion, every where, all the time.
Manage it or it will manage you.

i also say yes and agree with EDStainless statement.

Probably the most important case of SCC in CS is in the natural gas pipe industry. SCC occurs in certain soil/clay types.
