Phishing

(OP)
From my email provider,an excerpt, " Be suspicious of grammatical or spelling errors. These are usually indications of a fraudulent message."

So don't misspell stuff if you are trying to cheat. You will be discovered.

Buy a dictionary, keep it nearby and USE it. Webster's New World Dictionary of American English is recommended, and Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

RE: Phishing

And here I thought the Prince of Nigeria just spelled poorly when he asked me for my bank account number!

RE: Phishing

I consider my spelling good when MS Word can figure out withs its first try what I was trying to spell.

Thanks for the advice.

RE: Phishing

The recent Chase phishers are pretty good.  The target site was called jpchase-alert.com, although the link is labeled Chase.com.  Additionally, the other links on the email are legitimate Chase Bank links.

The bad giveaway is that it starts off with "Dear Chase Customer."  Jeez, you'd think that if I actually had an account with these guys, they'd mailmerge my correct name into the salutation.

RE: Phishing

I'm kinda partial to the knock-off equipment fabricators from China, who claim that they're based in Texas or Virginia. However their html addresses are in Chinese, and their English is atrocious.

Oh and I told the Prince of Nigeria and his extended family to shove it up their collective (insert body parts here).

RE: Phishing

Get a genuine Rolex and a university diploma of your choice for free with a gallon of the Prince's herbal solution with no side effects, you'd be impressed with the results!

How many of these things do you guys get per day?
(I get about 2 or 3, 99% of them are deleted immediately as the anti-spam spots them).
Maybe this is more of an Overcoming Obstacles to get my Work Done topic.

RE: Phishing

I only got 2 times this kind of emails:
Once was from an obscure bank saying that due to some crash or whatever they needed to upload again the details for the customers. I went to the real bank website and forwarded the phishing email to tehm. Did they thank me? Of course not.
The other one was a version of Nigerian Prince but this time with Savimbi's widow (the rebel fighter of Angola's civil war) that poor lady had some big $$$$ hidden somewhere and needed my help to go get it for her.
Personally, I find these emails quite amusing, but I am sorry for the persons that fall in these cons.

RE: Phishing

Yah, those are always a hoot.

Something to the effect that a. "you've been recommended to us as an honest person," and b. "we'd like you, the honest person, to help us commit bank fraud."  Gotta luv those nitwits, tho...

RE: Phishing

I have now given up reporting 419ers because I always get an "undelivered"  message back from the 419ers ISP site e.g. abuse@ISP. ; their spam protection is obviously far better than mine.
I have noticed that some of the spammers for drugs, medicines or bootleg software have taken to including extracts from noevls to fool the spam programs.

Why do I get the feeling that the bad guys are winning out there?

RE: Phishing

That's because a spam filter is an end-of-pipe solution. If providers attacked the problem at the source, i.e. identify those places from where an insane load of messages are sent and check those messages specifically, filtering would be much more effective and the @$$holes would be more easily caught. But I guess the internet is too democratic and too unorganised to allow that to be done effectively.

RE: Phishing

It would be great if they could track down those nerds who make viruses, too. I don't play baseball but I can find a pretty good use for a bat.

RE: Phishing

I forget who wrote it, but an SF story featured a guy who committed computer crime and was conditioned so he couldn't use computers (or anything that used computer technology) or maybe he was just prohibited from using any computer technology and everyone else was prohibited from providing hime access.
A smart idea. (if it worked) It would be interesting to see just what there is in life today that doesn't use what could be legally defined as "computer technology".
This isn't just denial of internet access or access to a PC, no mobile phones, game boys, TV or radio (lose definition), slot machines etc.
Nice idea but tough to achieve (how many drink drivers still go out and drive?)

So maybe that baseball bat and some good vigilantism isn't such a bad idea after all.

What time are you having your "bring a bat" party Ziggi?

RE: Phishing

Send me an invite to the bat party; just don't make any spelling errors so I mistake it for more spam.  I think if victims of identity theft got 5 minutes with the perp and a bat there by a lot less of that too!

RE: Phishing

The fundamental flaw here is that criminals are like entrepreneuers; they all think they can get away with it

RE: Phishing

Well it's good to know I'm not the only one with violent....I mean bat-wielding.....tendencies.

Sounds pretty good doesn't it?  The fact that I don't have Chase online account seems to be irrelevant.  This one is actually a poorer one, since the really good one has links to jp-chase.com, etc., nice words about privacy protection winky smile, etc.  This one's only weblink is

RE: Phishing

Apart from the fact that most of these emails are obviously bogus, one sure clincher is when you see URLs on the page that actually point to unnamed IP addresses, e.g. http://99.98.97.96/bankname

RE: Phishing

I was recently sent the Chase bank one, it did give me pause.  Immediately suspicious of course, but the URL for the link referenced the bank site - however my mouse-over showed me the true re-directed site.

They're getting less un-clever, but I guess it's like natural (virtual) selection?

RE: Phishing

Well, like I said, that one's the bad one.  The good one was much more subtle:

VERY subtle.  The only issue was that only one link is illegitimate, and that particular link is now dead.
