Creating a solid object by extruding an irregular surface

Creating a solid object by extruding an irregular surface

(OP)
I have created an irregular surface and I would like to know how to create a solid object by extending the edges of the surface a distance in a perpendicular direction to that surface.  Any insight would be great.

Thanks

RE: Creating a solid object by extruding an irregular surface

Search for the term 'thicken sheet' in the help files.

RE: Creating a solid object by extruding an irregular surface

You should be able to select the face or the face edges to use for the section and create an Extrusion using Face Normals as the direction as well.

Depending on the version of NX you're using, you may have to change the settings in Selection Intent so you can select the face or its edges.

RE: Creating a solid object by extruding an irregular surface

If you get an error while using the thicken sheet or extrude function then you'll need to look at the creation curves. If you have splines that aren't tangent it will self intersect before the desired thickness is achieved. If this surface is of your own creation it's pretty easy to fix, but if it's a supplied surface you'll have to re-build it. With enough cross sections you should be able to create a mesh within a .002 range.

An easier way would be to create a solid block that passes through the surface then trim the solid to the surface. Note that the surface must extend beyond the solid in order to perform a trim operation.

If the surface is smaller than the block your trying to trim you can also try the enlarge feature which will extend the length/width of the sheet.
