PDMWorks worthiness for a small company

My company is very small and is currently in the process of restructuring our filing system. I am wondering if PDMWorks is a worthwhile program for a small company or is it primarily designed for medium to large companies?

RE: PDMWorks worthiness for a small company

PDMWorks is entry level PDM. It can work for you but you will need to understand it first. You might consider taking training in it from your VAR to learn how it works and what it does.

My vote is absolutely a definite “Yes”. Even if I were working for my self I would use PDM\Works. One big advantage is the “as built” condition. You can call up any old history of any drawing with all linking revisions at that time for that drawing. So if I want to see a print sent to a customer a year ago I could do it through PDM\Works. Before PDM I have wanted to back to yesterdays work and delete all of today’s design. I could not do it easily. Now I can because I check-in to PDM everyday.

I agree with the others. I suggest that all users use some type of PDM software, no matter how big or small the company.

That's great. Thanks for the input. Now one more question.

I've found a lot of information about PDMWorks' Advanced Server. This Advanced server requires a good deal of programming. Does the basic version of PDMWorks require a lot of programming?

RE: PDMWorks worthiness for a small company

No. Not programming, just setup's and configuring to your liking. Very easy.

No programming is one of the things I like about PDM. Engineers have come to me and ask for changes to PDM, I would say we cannot change PDM.

RE: PDMWorks worthiness for a small company

PDMWorks is ideal for smaller companies due to its simplicity and low cost.  I would recommend staying away from Advanced Server for now; get used to the basic tool first.

RE: PDMWorks worthiness for a small company

I'd generally agree with the above statements - once you get used to it it is very handy at keeping things organised.

One piece of advice though, use it for a couple of smallish 'pilot' projects first to get used to its inner workings & integrate with your drawing/part numbering system (if that's what you want).  My pilot project was a massive assembly with thousands of configurations and subassemblies and it's not as tidy as it could be...
