(OP)
hello i am very much interested in finding out exactly how the intermitten controll , for the windshield wipers,  works on my car. it really doesnt matter the type or model car. i am just looking to proto up my own intermitten control at 12 volts for a little r and d in my work shop. of course i would be interested in looking at different types of systems and there strenghts and weakness. thank you for your time.     barry

RE: intermitten ww controlls

There is a valid patent on intermittent wipe, so you should be able to get some idea from that.

More to the point these days it is done in software I think, so there are no interesting details.

barrytom,  I would guess that the earlier ones would use a timer circuit. Wouldnt be too hard to cobble one up using maybe a 555 IC.  you could make it variable with a little more imagination.  .

RE: intermitten ww controlls

If you play with your wipers you will notice that when you turn the wiper switch on they start to sweep and if you switch off the wiper switch before they reach the end of their cycle they will self park.  There is a switch track inside the wiper motor which provides this function.

An intermittent wiper circuit turns on the wiper (in parallel) with the wiper switch and then turns off before the end of the cycle.  There are lots of circuits to do this using everything from 555 timer, microcontrollers to simple RC timing circuits, generally all have some variable timing.  They use things such as relays or SCRs as the switch.

Pete
