Need help with upload problem

Need help with upload problem

Need help with upload problem

(OP)
Hello all. I'm new here.

I am running Windows XP Professional with Zone Alarm as my firewall. This computer is fairly new, just about five months old, and I have noticed that whenever I upload any files -- whether it be on websites, peer to peer servers or on instant messaging programs, if any upload exceeds 40 kb/s my internet connection is stalled and I cannot access ANY websites at all. All I receive is a "page cannot be displayed" no matter how many times I refresh or whether I use another browser (I use IE primarily).

If the upload is below 40 kb/s everything is fine.

I have convictions that Zone Alarm could be the culprit but I really haven't a clue.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

RE: Need help with upload problem

Hi and welcome to Eng-Tips.

Limiting factor on downloads and uploads is almost always due to connection rather than computer or software firewall. What type is your connection eg POTS, ADSL, SDSL, T1? If POTS then what is your modem type and speed? Have you asked local telco to adjust POTS gain and test for noise figures?

Can you also confirm exactly what you mean by 40kb/s upload? Presumably if you're regularly uploading to websites then you're FTPing to your own ISP.

Many computer engineering professionals prefer to use a hardware firewall rather than software, so you may consider this.

Good Luck

I am on a cable connection through a wireless router and have clocked my upload capacity at 126 kbps. My modem speed is 11 mbps. It is not necessarily uploading to websites that is the problem, rather the primary obstacle is a direct connection to other users on peer to peer networks and instant messenger services. I have proxied through these services with no result.

I'm not quite sure what to do now to fix the problem.

Post on Tek-tips, for one.

RE: Need help with upload problem

P2P rates may be throttled by network traffic bandwidth or by the other party's download speed. You might also check that the problem is b.w rather than latency by pinging the connection in both directions and comparing answers.

If this isn't getting you there, then follow IRstuff's advise and try starting from:
