How do you motivate yourself?

How do you motivate yourself?

How do you motivate yourself?

(OP)

I have been in a rut this month.  A pretty bad one at that.  I just have no motivation for some reason.  I suppose I'm just feeling burnt out.  I'm looking for some new ideas of how to motivate myself.  Anyone have any sucessful self-motivation tools I could try?

RE: How do you motivate yourself?

Find something to do other than engineering outside of work.  Find something to look forward to.

Also try to learn some new engineering if possible, maybe something you want to do at work or something your work doesn't even do.

Put on your kickers and plow through it.

Have one of your buddies put his shoe up something to get your head out of there.  It's work.  You only have 50 years to go.  Just do it.

RE: How do you motivate yourself?

Probably you are doing something you don't like.  There are 2 ways out.  (1)  Start liking what you are doing.  or better still, (2) Start doing something that you like.

If you can't do both, try and do something close to your heart, may or may not be work-related.  Give yourself a pat on your back when you do something and start feeling a sense of achievement when you finish a task successfully.

Good luck.

If you can afford try to get self employed. You will then have no time to brood over these luxuries. You will be constantly engaged and concerned over more serious matters .

Your adrenalin will be pumped high as the bills come in faster than the payments.

RE: How do you motivate yourself?

Every morning, compose a short list of measurable, achievable goals for the day.  Make each one happen before you go home.  Repeat.

Some people suggest writing the list out, which can be depressing if the goals are too much of a stretch.

Alternatively, keep a chronological text file of what you do each day.  Just the facts.  Who you spoke to, what time, what was said, like that.  Brief and factual.  Reviewing it at the end of the day gives you a sense of accomplishment, and may suggest items for tomorrow's list.

Keep the chron files indefinitely.  Nothing impresses a boss like being able to reconstruct a day in the past with a little certainty.  "Yes, I spoke to Joe, and he agreed to..".

RE: How do you motivate yourself?

I keep an annual "Accomplishments list" as well as the goal plan that my supervisor and I established for the year.  Something that gets accomplished during the day gets added to the list (good to have on hand at the annual review and good to look at occasionally to see just how much stuff you actually can/do get done).  The goal plan for the year I have hanging up in my office to remind me (and others) on agreed priorities.

Of course having a family to provide for also keeps me motivated.

Find something outside of work that refreshes you.  Do not sacrifice the time spent doing it.

Look for a new job.  When you find one, change or realize how good you have it.

Talk to a customer.  If they are happy with the product, it will give a sense of accomplishment.

Orgainize a group meeting, outside the office (lunch, party, paintball).  Getting to know those around you can motivate you... and them.

Do something else.

Motivation is linked to boredom.

Boredom will kill you. If you are not motivated, you are bored. If you are bored, your job is of no challenge.

Time to move on.
