Buttered Edge NDE

Buttered Edge NDE

Buttered Edge NDE

(OP)
Hello All

We want to avoid PWHT at site.

The Site Joint is 65mm thick

The item (a) which is high alloy overlayed (Inside overlay) is being procured from one manufacturer in Italy

Item (b)which is also high alloy overlayed (insied) is being procured from UK.

It has been decided to get both the items such that the weld edge is duly buttered (8mm)with High Alloy weld electrode and egde prepared,

On receipt of the items, the edge of (a) will be aligned with thed edge of (b) and welding will be carried out at site.

Access from inside is not available after welding.

Now the NDE at site is RT and UT.

Since the butt joint is undergoing RT at site, we want the buttered edge ( Which ultimately is going to be a part of butt joint) also to be of the same quality level of the ultimate butt joint.

We had specified RT of the edge (Using Composite film and Speed and slow film combo technique) I have my self reviewed many films in the past. But to explain a technique to Italian company is becoming a daunting task.

If there is some standard write up or standard addressing NDE of Buttered edge i can simply ask them to refer the standard.

The question is : is there some standard or standard write up? for UT of the edge and Rt of the Edge.

RE: Buttered Edge NDE

I believe you are better off providing the client(s) with your own written explanation of the two NDT methods and their purpose of use for this job. If necessary, hire a technical translator to aid in your written explanation. I would also cite various paragraphs from ASME Section VIII, Div 1 regarding final NDT of girth and seam weldments, and the ability to use either RT or UT.

RE: Buttered Edge NDE

With the help of your NDE rep you may want to write a procedure for the work
