RE: BBC English

That is a usefule site!

I don't speak the queen's english - we colonists have been bastardising it for the better part of half of a millenium - but it is still nice to know how the Brits go about it.

RE: BBC English

I'm so glad English is my native language...

I can't imagine trying to learn it from scratch!

RE: BBC English

"from scratch" is sort of an idiom.

Idioms, usually do not have a reason, and usually do not follow the "rules" of the language. They just are. The speaker/listener just have to know it.

I always thought "scratch" was some kind of wonder ingredient in (especially American) cookery.  The best endorsement possible for any food product is that it is made "from scratch".  But where do you buy this marvellous health-promoting stuff from?

RE: BBC English

You don't. If you bought "scratch", they you won't buy the advertised product. That is why "made from scratch" is such a powerful advertising tool. winky smile
