how far should a sprinkler head be from smoke dectector by code?

Depends on the type of sprinkler, see NFPA 13, 2002, chapter 8.6.5 on obstructions.

If the sprinkler head is heat actuated and the system is tied into the fire alarm monitoring system, there is most likely no code required reason to install a smoke detector in that area of coverage.

Would disagree with this comment there could be numerous reasons to have smoke detectors in an area with sprinkler coverage to include to activate it such as in a preaction system.
