What are the requirements to work on electrical wiring for motors in a petrochemical plant?  I had an individual who was trained as a mechanic, with no elctrical training, who wired up a starter for a 480V motor.  I was under the impression that this work required some training or qualification.  My manager told me that qualification is only required for higher voltage work.  Is he correct?

I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I want to make sure I am in compliance with OSHA.

RE: Qualified Electrician

Realistically, you could be setting yourself up for a lot of liability issues.  If you have someone who is not trained and/or certified to be an electrician and they install a motor or some other piece of equipment wrong and it was know, then there huge problems.  You could be voiding any warrenty on the equipment.  You could also create legal issues if that piece of equipment fails and injures someone.  Lawyers would have a field day with the case.  It is best to get this guy trained, or even better get an electrician who is licensed and certified.
