I've recently had the same problem. I have trying to work with Calculix, a freeware FEA program that appears to have some great power. Calculix uses the Abaqus file format and yesterday, I ran my first successful model.
Some of the resources that you may want to try:
www.calculix.de
www.bconverged.com/calculix
and the Yahoo! Users Group
groups.yahoo.com/group/calculix/
There are also some people on this forum that are either the authors of Calculix or are, at a minimum, very closely tied to it.

the ABAQUS Keywords Reference Manual (2 volumes, aprox. 1200 pages, for version 6.5).
Of course, you will need only some of them for a specific type of analysis and modeling.
