HSK tool holders
HSK tool holders
(OP)
We are purchasing a large gantry type machining center. The subject of HSK holders has risen. This machine will have a spindle with 85 hp and up to 5000 RPM's. The manufacturer of the machine is recommending a HSK63 spindle. I was looking at HSK 80 sizes and I'm not finding very many standard holders. HSK 100 maybe a option.
What is everyone else using? Is HSK holders a good option? Our shop currently uses CAT50.
Thanks in advance,
Larry

RE: HSK tool holders
I don't have the data in front of me, but I don't think HSK 63 has as much "topplng moment" resistance (radial load resistance with a long tool) as a CAT 50.
Are you using CAT 50 at high speeds now, and are you experiencing tool sticking ?
Manufacturing HSK spindle noses is a TOUGH. Darned tough. If you are using automatic drawbars some of the issues are Multiple angles the taper and the jaw actuating area, drive key radiuses, key depths and widths..... The taper may have to be ground after spindle assembly. (True of steep tapers too). In fairly recent history there have been multiple episodes when reps from very reputable spindle/machine-tool/tooling/draw-bar companies were all on site with certified taper gages from different manufacturers, trying to work thru "problems," and everybody's taper gages gave different "answers." What the heck do you do then?
Manufacturing consistent, legal HSK tooling is better, but ..........
RE: HSK tool holders
From a machine manufacturing standpoint, I would much rather sell you HSK, but from a user standpoint, I would stick with CAT50.
