Weld Inspection for Tilt-up

Weld Inspection for Tilt-up

Weld Inspection for Tilt-up

(OP)
All,

I'm working on a project in the Midwest for the Corps (one-story training building, Ie=1.0) where local jurisdiction has no say about the construction site.  The building is tilt-up with CFS trusses.  The Seismic Design Category is 'A'.  I have welded connections throughout, but no full pen welds or any moment connections just simple shear connectors, single-pass fillet welds no greater than 5/16".  I keep looking through the 2003 IBC, chapter 17 but cannot grasp whether I need a welding inspector on site per code.  I look at section 1707.1 and understand I do not need a special inspector because it's in a low seismic area but then I look at section 1704.1 and cannot find where I'm excluded from special inspection.  Any ideas?

TIA

RE: Weld Inspection for Tilt-up

IBC Section 1707.1 deals with special inspections of the SFRS for SEISMIC RESISTANCE in structures assigned to SDC C-F etc. For structural steel, these inspections are to be continuous per AISC 341...ref IBC Se 1707.2

Now then what about the SFRS in structures assigned to SDC A and B...do they require special inspection? Yes they do as outlined in IBC Sec 1704.3 unless in the opinion of the AHJ/BO the work is of a minor nature and they grant an exemption...ref IBC Sec 1704.1(1)

For the SFRS in structures assigned to SDC A or B most of the tasks are periodic as indicated in Table 1704.3 and not continuous as required for the SFRS is structures assigned to SDC C-F.

RE: Weld Inspection for Tilt-up

Without regard to the level of inspection, the code requires that welds conform to AWS requirements.  The only way to determine this is some level of inspection by a Certified Welding Inspector.
