CATexp files.

CATexp files.

CATexp files.

(OP)
Hi,

We draw our components using Catia V5, then export the data to toolmakers for manufacture, usually using a neutral format sucha s STEP or IGES.

Recently we have begun dealing with a new toolmaker who is requesting the data as catia export files. Therefore a couple of questions:

1) Does this imply that he is able to read catia data? If so what is the purpose of an export file, would it not be possible to just send CATpart file direct?

2) Are catia export files still current in v5, or are they a carry over from v4?

Thanks in advance

RE: CATexp files.

I am not sure why they would be going that route, but it sounds to me that they do not have catia, but maybe an external translator which they have been using for previouse V4 customers. It would be advisable to ask them which data they need to do thier actual work. They may be used to a certain format, and not know what you can supply. Suggest sending iges ot step. It may be that this is really what they use. We use iges and step in out engineering shop.

RE: CATexp files.

It may also be that the salesman doesn't understand enough to ask for the correct format.  He may have worked somewhere, or is somewhat familiar with CATIA V4, and so knows enough to ask for exported CATIA Data.  Or they may have V4, but not V5.  Ask more questions.

RE: CATexp files.

Just to expand on catiajim's response, if you do send out V5 data, ask what version is accepted.  Most external translators are a few versions behind.  If so, you can launch the Downward compatibility tool under Tools-->Utility to change the version of the file.

Regards,
Derek

RE: CATexp files.

I'm not sure why they would wan't to reverse engineer, but all I can think of that they have a stand-alone catia translator which they used for other suppliers in the past. Do they know that you are using V5? Maybe suggest sending them step or iges files direct.
