Solid works 2005 - auto size with equations - help

Solid works 2005 - auto size with equations - help

(OP)
I am very new to SolidWorks, and have taught myself the basics. I am trying to design a nightstand and want to be able to change the width and depth of the top surface and have the front and side rails change sizes in accordance with the top surface.

I thought I could do this with equations. I set up an equation on my front rail to be the width of the top surface-6".

The rail will only change size when I edit the sketch in the assembly.

I thought it would automatically update when the top was changed. Did I do something wrong?

TIA

Dean

Use a skeleton or layout sketch at the assembly level, and have it drive your parts.

RE: Solid works 2005 - auto size with equations - help

It depends how you created the model. Was it top-down or bottom-up design? Are parts in-context with others?

Equations are very useful, but can be a PITA sometimes. I prefer to use Skeleton or Layout Sketches to control simple associative changes.

If you can zip the part & assy files and post per FAQ559-1177, maybe someone will take a look.

cheers
