Heavy Duty Concrete Floor Slab

For a heavy duty ground bearing industrial floor slab does anyone have experience of omitting steel reinforcing mesh and using steel fibres in the ready mixed concrete? Is this technique commonly used as a replacement for mesh or only for surface, perhaps shrinkage , cracks.

Of course some useful internet links would be useful..

In my opinion, replacing WWF with fiber reinforcement is an improvement. I have never used steel fiber, but in 1985 we switched from WWF to polypropylene fiber for industrial floors at our electric generating stations - have never regretted the change. Steel fibers are probably even better, here is an article

I've seen some absolute disasters, that have ended in litigation, where fibres have been used in thick (250-350mm/10-14"), heavy-duty (large trucks and mine vehicles), concrete slabs.  I would only ever use traditional reinforcement for these slabs.

I would, however, consisder fibres for lightly loaded slabs.

Many years ago I worked on a new building for forging company and that project had a 12" thick UNREINFORCED slab-on-grade throughout the industrial portion of the building.  Jointing and placing was controled, but no reinforcing of any kind. There were some heavily loaded areas for steel storage too.
