TYPE OF PIPE WRAP TO USE?

TYPE OF PIPE WRAP TO USE?

TYPE OF PIPE WRAP TO USE?

(OP)
Our Issue:
We have some carbon steel piping in the Condenser Air Removal System that is degraded (rusted) from the inside out, and have experienced some through holes of about ½” diameter.  These are temporarily patched.  We will be UTing trying to locate additional degraded areas.

The lines vary in sized from 12” NPS. down to 3/4” NPS and normally operate between +10 psig and –14 psig (vacuum).  Max line temperatures are low, 115deg. F. maximum.  The process fluid is moist salty air. Piping is A53 Gr. B, A106 Gr. B, or A155 Gr. KC60.  Nominally schedule 40 for smaller piping, 3/8” wall for 12” pipe. Joints are butt welds and socket welds on 2” and under line size.

We are considering an option to wrap the piping or sections of the piping to prevent air in leakage where we find areas that are likely to form additional leaks due to wall thinning.

We are looking for any Information on any product/services.

Pipe Wrap Process method and specifications (limitations)
Chemical (MSDS) data sheet for review by our Chemistry and Industrial Safety groups.
Required surface prep for application.
Clearance required of application.
Technical data to support number of wraps of fiberglass tape on line under vacuuum -14 psig.

We would appreciate this information quickly to determine our options.
Thank you

RE: TYPE OF PIPE WRAP TO USE?

Here is the one we've used for many years with very good results.

There are quite a few tape people out there.

Also look up ASME PCC-2 as guidance on repairs.

RE: TYPE OF PIPE WRAP TO USE?

To wrap the pipe outside can not solve the internal corrosion of the salty air running inside the CS pipe. The fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) type of tape or coating may be used for samll repair. It shall be thick or strong to hold the pressure unless the whole steel pipe was eaten.
One thought, since the pressure and temperature are low, considering replace with the PVC or FRP piping.
