SW 2006 will not open a file that SW 2005 could

SW 2006 will not open a file that SW 2005 could

(OP)
I have an assembly that I checked into the PDM last April 2005 using SolidWorks 2005. So I know the assembly was good at that point. Now we need to open the assembly and SolidWorks 2006 gives me an Out of Memory Error. I tried opening as built no luck. I have old backup copies of the file on my local drive, which I know no one can change. That assembly will not open either. Our VAR is working on the file now and if he cannot fix it then SolidWorks will get the file.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have a Dell Workstation x64 Dual core with 2 GB of ram, Windows XP pro and nVidia 3400 video card with the latest SolidWorks driver, and the SolidWorks button turned on the card. This Dell Workstation is only used for SolidWorks 2006 sp3.4, no e-mail, no web surfing, and no games. I defrag once a week, delete the C:\Documents and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp directory every reboot. I turn off my virus protection. I have removed everything Black Viper says I can remove.

Try opening it again with SW 2005 and see if it works.

Opening the file in 2005 will take some time, but worth a try.
The latest is that an associate used “Advanced” to open the file. Then suppressed everything while opening, then unsuppressed all except the hardware. Now the assembly model will open, but not the drawing.

Bradley,

It sounds like the assembly you're trying to load is very memory-intensive; is that correct?  SolidWorks 2006 is more resource-intensive than SW2005, so that could explain why you're crashing in '06 and not '05.  My first suggestion would be to activate the 3GB switch in XP, if you haven't already.  If that doesn't work, it may be time to consider a 64-bit system.

PDMAdmin,

I have set the 3GB switch, that did not help. As for 64 bit we are waiting for release of SolidWorks and MS before switching to 64 bit.

Bradley,

That's a wise move, but as an FYI... some of our CAD testers have reported to me that using the 32-bit version of SolidWorks on a machine with 64-bit XP and 64-bit hardware yielded a dramatic improvement.  I'm in the process of testing it out myself.

RE: SW 2006 will not open a file that SW 2005 could

I've seen what PDMAdmin has seen--a friend of mine does analysis on a mega-system.  Great performance gains by using Win 64 on a 64-bit system.

Is the Win 64-bit released to the masses?

A star for both of you. I put in a request to upgrade.
Thank you.

Here is what we did to get the file opened. An associate opened the file using advanced open and suppressed everything. Then he when back and un-suppressed all except screws, washers, and nuts. Then he saved the assembly back into PDM. Of course the BOM was all messed up. I went through the assembly and suppressed all mates to all hardware. This allowed me to open the drawing with the BOM correct.

Our VAR just called back about our assembly. He said SolidWorks is going to fix our issue in service pack 4. The service pack should be out in about 4 weeks.
