Activated Carbon Shelf Life

Activated Carbon Shelf Life

Activated Carbon Shelf Life

(OP)
I have a batch of activated carbon amine filters which is about to reach its 3-year shelf life at the point when we finally install it in the filters.  The carbon vendor is very keen to either sell us a fresh batch or charge a premium rate to regenerate it.

Question is, how critical is the shelf life?  Should we be concerned that it has been stored for slightly longer than 3 years?  Does anyone have experience of using activated carbon beyond its shelf life?

The carbon has been stored properly in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

Thanks!

RE: Activated Carbon Shelf Life

I'd put it in and keep an eye on its performance, but maybe that's just me. I would tend to think the capacity should not collapse all of a sudden when you turn a page on the calender.
What's your typical runlength?

RE: Activated Carbon Shelf Life

If the material has been in sealed containers, like open top drums with lids then why would it matter if it was one year or fifty.  There should be very little air exchange if any so shelf life should be irrelevent.

My opinion only.

StoneCold

RE: Activated Carbon Shelf Life

I agree. Try it and see how it performs.

The difficulty is usually, in 3 years time, it may have degraded due to "lots of reasons". You won't know until you try.
