Solidworks freezing up

Solidworks freezing up

(OP)
I hava an issue with SW locking up while editing parts outside an assembly. If I edit one part while the assembly is open and then click back into the assembly window the program freezes. Doesn't matter how complex the assembly is I've tried with two cubes, make one bigger and the program locks up. System is a Dell workstation twin Xeons, 1GB of ram and nVidia 3400 vid card with latest driver. If I stay in the assembly I can run all day.

RE: Solidworks freezing up

(OP)
The driver I am using is 7.1.8.4 and the card is an nVidia Quadro FX 3400. This is the latest approved driver from the Solidworks website. I have no other issues ( I think this one is big enough)

RE: Solidworks freezing up

How large is the assembly? Do you have any external references.  I just starting using 2006 SP 3.3 and I to am experiencing the same problem.  I'm working on this large test fixture 300+ parts with lots of detail.  The designer that started this project did a lot of incontext features.  I edit a part and then go back to the assembly is goes off to rebuild land and comes back a few minutes later.  I didn't have this problem with 2005.  But then again I've only been on 2006 for three days so I still need to check all my settings.

Are you running over a network? If yes, have IT test the network.

RE: Solidworks freezing up

I am working from my hard drive but we do have a network license. The freeze that I get is not recoverable I have to kill the program through the task manager. I have tried this problem with the simplest of parts (two cubes) and I still get the same results, also I have tried shutting down all other applications still same result. The system has two drives an regular 80gig maxtor and a 40 gig scsi from seagate. I am running SW 05 SP 4.0.

Thanks for the info on repairing an installation.

RE: Solidworks freezing up

My SP3.3 does that, too.  I've found that this SP doesn't handle circular references well.  It allows a reference to another part in an assembly, then gets into a multiple rebuild cycle when re-entering the assembly.  This does have an end, but it will do this every time I go to a part window and then return to the assembly.

I just delete the offending references in the sketch and leave it alone.  It's annoying because I want the references to work and auto-update--so it means manual updating--tedious.

RE: Solidworks freezing up

OK, that last post of mine was posted an hour after I started.  I meant to reply to the first post.

This seems to be a problem with SW thinking there is a circular reference.  And there is--sort of.  One part refers to another part in the assembly that was perhaps inserted after the edited part?  I'm not sure--haven't thought it through enough.  But I would make similar references in older/other SPs and not see this problem.

My system is fast and I can watch it go through a rebuild process in the task bar below--it rebuilds every feature of every part with references each time I return to the assembly.  Sometimes it seems to rebuild some of the parts more than once.  My old system would take up to two minutes for this process to complete--the new system is much faster.  An old system would flip out and perhaps crash.

RE: Solidworks freezing up

I have an assembly that I checked into the PDM last April 2005 using SolidWorks 2005. So I know the assembly was good at that point. Now we need to open the assembly and SolidWorks 2006 gives me an Out of Memory Error. I tried opening as built no luck. I have old backup copies of the file on my local drive, which I know no one can change. That assembly will not open either. Our VAR is working on the file now and if he cannot fix it then SolidWorks will get the file.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have a Dell Workstation x64 Dual core with 2 GB of ram, Windows XP pro and nVidia 3400 video card with the latest SolidWorks driver, and the SolidWorks button turned on the card. This Dell Workstation is only used for SolidWorks 2006 sp3.4, no e-mail, no web surfing, and no games. I defrag once a week, delete the C:\Documents and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp directory every reboot. I turn off my virus protection. I have removed everything Black Viper says I can remove.

RE: Solidworks freezing up

autom8er,

If you are still having the same problem, try shutting down SolidWorks and remove the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / SolidWorks

(If necessary, enlist the help of your IT department to help you do that, since deleting the wrong thing in the registry can wreck your computer.)

Then start SolidWorks again.  You'll lose your custom settings, but that should get SolidWorks out of Twilight Zone mode.  Doing a repair on the install should accomplish the same thing, but in my experience, that doesn't always happen.

RE: Solidworks freezing up

Have you tried turning on Software OpenGL from the performance options?  Doing so takes the video card's GPU out of the loop, so performance drops.  However if your crash goes away, it is a strong indication that it is a video driver issue.

I have tried the open GL option and the problem stays the same. I am going to do a complete uninstall and reinstall over the weekend I'll let you know how it goes.

I've found this has helped to solve a number of crashes for me:

Close SolidWorks

Go to START - SOLIDWORKS - SOLIDWORKS TOOLS - SolidWorks Rx

Scroll down to the bottom of the diagnostics screen and select "bypass Tools/Options settings for the next session"

Try to complete your task - it normally works for me!

I just tried bandh's suggestion and it worked. I shut down solidworks and rebooted and it still works fine.

Thanks

Surely I should get a star for that!!
