Differences in AMD chips

Differences in AMD chips

(OP)
Can anyone share their knowledge in what the differences are between the Athlon AMD chip and the Opteron, and what the benefits of one might be over the other for use with a workstation to run SW.

Second part of this question:  The clock speeds pertaining to these chips... can they be compared to P4 chips... in other words if a P4 chip is rated at 3 GHz and an AMD Athlon chip is 2.6 GHz.... is it being compared apples to apples?

Thanks.  Considering a new work station and trying to nail down some of the finer issues.

Thanks for referring the article, CBL.  That spells out the differences.

RE: Differences in AMD chips

I use one of each--the older system has an Opteron, the newer an FX-60 (dual-core, 64-bit, lots of money).  Workstation and server usage can be somewhat similar, depending on what you're doing.

By the way, comparing clock speed between Intel and AMD is certainly no apples to apples.  My Opteron machine has a 1.7 GHz chip that rivalled P4 3.X GHz machines in benchmarks.  Clock speed is no longer everything, especially with the crazy heat generated in cranking up the GHz--so AMD got a jump on speeding their chips in other ways.

Maybe I should run a benchmark on my new FX-60 to see where we are with new stuff. ..

thanks Jeff.  I run both Mac and PC platforms and when PC's were running at 2.8 GHz and Macs were topping out at 1.25 GHz... it was thought (from what I read, at least read from apples PR) that the Mac systems were running faster.  In looking at the specs for a new system I'm considering, the speed of the AMD Athlon 64 is about 2.6 (or 2.8)...so when thinking the current P4 chips are around 3.2 or faster.....I wanted to make sure the comparisons are on an even field.

Thanks for the input.
