P-Delta Analysis for non sway frame

P-Delta Analysis for non sway frame

P-Delta Analysis for non sway frame

(OP)
hi all
with refrence to ACI articles from 10.11 to 10.14
The code stated in 10.11 that if i will not fellow the steps in article 10.12 to 10.14 for calculating magnification factor for column end moments resulting from slenderness effect i should fellow the producres for making non linear analysis for both material and gometry, instead the code stated in 10.14.3 that i can use P-Delta analysis with modification factors for (Igross) to account for cracked sections piror to section failure.

BUT for non sway frames the only analysis that is required using computer software is non liear material and gometry analysis.
but the code did not state that P-Delta anaylsis is allowed for non sway frames
is that what the statment of code?

RE: P-Delta Analysis for non sway frame

10.10.1 does not distinguish between sway and non-sway.  Those are code terms used to differentiate between the approximate analysis methods to be used.  You may always do an analysis per 10.10.1.  In lieu of using 10.10.1 and providing you meet the necessary conditions, you may use an approximate analysis method as given.

Is that what you are asking?

well i am asking excatly if i can make P-Delta anaylsis using the modification factors for gross moment of interia for non sway frames as it is stated only in code that p-delta analysis is only allowed using this modification factors for sway frames only(10.13.4.1)

RE: P-Delta Analysis for non sway frame

Which ACI 318 are you looking at?  I don't find a 10.14.3 except in the 89 version and that's talking about composite compression members.

RE: P-Delta Analysis for non sway frame

P-Delta analysis(for side-sway effect) is only meaningful for side-sway permitted frame, at least in one direction.
