SWx and MS Office

SWx and MS Office

SWx and MS Office

(OP)

I don't have much issue with this at work, since whe have access to the MS Office package, but at home I don't. I use OpenOffice, because I think it's great and it's free...

However, Last night, I was called upon to use a design table in a part file, and of course, I could not.

(now to my question)...

does anyone know a way to "work around" MS Office (get solidworks to recognize other text / spreadsheet programs... or does anyone know when solidworks will get out of bed with MS!

RE: SWx and MS Office

I thought SW 2006 was free from Excel, but maybe that's only for BOMs.  Are you using 2006?

How do you like Open Office?

RE: SWx and MS Office

We are starting to use OpenOffice for non-solidworks stuff as well.  Solidworks still needs XL2000 or better for you to be able to edit design tables, and it needs Word 2000 for you to be able to run spellcheck on drawings (which is un-documented BTW).

RE: SWx and MS Office

I guess I'd better keep my MS Office 2000 for a while longer. ..

RE: SWx and MS Office

Does SW06 still use Word for the Design Journal?

RE: SWx and MS Office

I'm using 06, and NO features will work w/o the MS office packages... Now I mainly use the SWx built in features (like BOM & Tables) but occasionally I need to use things such as design tables, and Can Not because of the open office (which i love btw - puts MS office to shame and is **free**!

Other software can be "tricked" into using OpenOffice in lieu of MS Office, but I can't seem to figure out how to get SWx to be fooled! - WHY has SWx sold it's soul to Bill Gates? Shoot - you can't even use Mozilla to interface w/ the swx website... seems a little sketchy to me...

Any ideas would be greatly appriciated!

RE: SWx and MS Office

When you say Mozilla, do you mean Firefox? I have no problems accessing SW with Firefox.

SW hasn't "sold its soul", it's just catering to the larger market. A sound business practice which most companies have adopted. MS Office is the de-facto standard & most used office software. Having said that, I too would like to see SW be able to run on alternative OS's.
