Trimming a pin to a surface.

Trimming a pin to a surface.

Trimming a pin to a surface.

(OP)
I am trying to trim a pin to a contoured surface in my model with out success.
The pin was created using the revolve sketch command.
The cut with surface icon is available but once i select it I cannot select my pin or surfaces around it.
There is also a clearance hole through the part for the pin.
The trim surface icon is greyed out.
any suggestions.

RE: Trimming a pin to a surface.

Try extruding the "pin" to the surface. You may have to create a plane for the sketch.

Yes, that's what I suggest. You might have some trouble extruding to multiple surfaces. See what you can do with that.

RE: Trimming a pin to a surface.

You can edit the pin in the context of the assembly and generate a surface body in the pin by offsetting your desired surfaces at a distance of 0.

You should then be able to cut the pin with this surface body.

RE: Trimming a pin to a surface.

It's a bit of a hack, but to get the surface you need in your part you could do a surface offset twice (1mm up / 1mm down for example, keep the value very small!). First you offset the surface in the part you want to use as a cut tool, then offset the 'offset surface' back. Then the 'cut with surface' tool works as expected. It will even update properly.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions they put me on the right track.
I ended up doing a surface fill which intersected the full pin diameter.
Afterwards I did a surface offset up .040 and then back as suggested.
Next I noticed some of the trim commands were nolonger greyed out which was nice to see.
And finally I was able to use that surface fill to trim my pin it was a beautiful thing!thumbsup
